The Ratu Boko Temple is a complex of a majestic palace that was built in the 8th century. The most magnificent building in its time was built by one relative of the person who built Borobudur.
Ratu Boko Palace is such a magnificent building that was built during the reign of Rakai Panangkaran, who is one of the descendants from Wangsa Syailendra. This palace was originally named Abhayagiri Vihara, which means ‘monastery on a peaceful hill’. The palace was built for seeking solitude and seclusion, and also to focus on the spiritual life.
While being in this palace, tourists can feel peacefulness, as well as see the view of Yogyakarta City and Prambanan Temple with the background of Mount Merapi. Ratu Boko Palace is located 196 meters above sea level. This palace, that has an area of 250,000 square meters, is divided into four parts, central, west, southeast, and east.
The central part consists of the main gate building, a field, Pembakaran/Burning Temple, ponds, stone piles, and Paseban. While the southeastern area consists of a Pendopo(gazebo-like building), Balai-Balai, three temples, ponds, and the Keputren complex. In the east, there are cave complexes, Buddhist stupas, and ponds. Whereas the western part only consists of hills.
The Ratu Boko Temple is located approximately 3 kilometers to the south from Prambanan Temple. More precisely, on Jalan Raya Piyungan – Prambanan No.KM. 2, Gatak, Bokoharjo, Prambanan District, Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta.
